The Busy parents' Guide to Running

Ready to Run?

Struggling to start or return to running after having kids? Whether you are recently postpartum or have a teenager, we have the tools, inspiration, and motivation to help you get running.

Step 1: Assess Your Readiness to Run

Whether you recently had a baby or it’s just been a while since you ran, it’s important to assess you readiness to start a running program. First, make sure you are up-to-date on your annual physical and have addressed any questions or concerns with your medical provider.

Next, it’s time to self-assess your readiness to run with a Return to Run Readiness Screen. Here is a self-assessment tool I personally love to use!

Step 2: Make Your Plan

Sure, you could just lace up your shoes and hit the road. But if you have a Type A personality like me, spending a little time determining your goals and making a plan is a great way to save yourself from future frustration as you run into common “return to run” and parenting hurdles.

Step 3: Find Your Cheerleaders

I won’t sugar coat it. Returning to running comes with some hard days. Thankfully, it comes with some amazing ones, too! That’s why it’s important to find your cheerleaders. The people you can virtually high-five when you hit new milestones and people who can relate when you just can’t seem to get out the door for even a 20-minute run.

Step 4: Track Progress

This is an optional step but one that we recommend. Returning to running postpartum comes with some hard days. It can feel like you are taking two steps back for every step forward. Therefore, tracking a few high level metrics can help you see the big picture and realize how far you have come. This is a great way to stay motivated and gives you lots of excuses to celebrate with your cheerleaders.

Step 5: Adjust, As Needed

Returning to running is rarely a linear process. You will run into hurdles and need to adjust your plan along the way. Consider how you can adapt your plan to fit this busy phase of life.
